The United States supports the establishment of a special court for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, says a representative of the State Department in Washington.
– We believe that this special court should be rooted in the Ukrainian judiciary. It would be the most obvious way to establish a new court, says a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Such a court will increase the chances that those who should be held accountable will be, according to the authorities in Washington.
Beth Van Schaak, who heads the Office of Global Criminal Justice in the US Foreign Ministry, also expressed US support for the special court on Monday evening.
– This type of court will facilitate wider cross-regional and international support, as well as demonstrate Ukraine’s leadership in ensuring that war criminals are held accountable, she said in a speech.
Earlier this month, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. He is accused of having committed war crimes when he is said to have forcibly relocated hundreds of children from Ukraine.
According to the ICC, there are reasonable grounds to believe that Putin bears individual criminal responsibility.
