The Spanish national team, champion of the Women’s World Cup, will return to the field again when it faces its Swedish counterpart today, Friday, in the wake of the incident of former Spanish Federation president Luis Rubiales kissing player Jennifer Hermoso in the final of the tournament, where the players were forced to be in the national team while he chose Others boycott.
Rubiales kissed Hermoso after the Spanish national team won the tournament in the final, which was held in Sydney, Australia, against the English national team, on August 20.
Rubiales resigned from his position several weeks ago, after being suspended by the International Federation (FIFA), amid an investigation into the incident and a threat of boycott by the women’s team after demands for changes in the Spanish Federation.
A number of female players refused to participate against Sweden in Gothenburg, as well as in Tuesday’s match against Switzerland, but government pressure and the threat of sanctions made some of them join the team camp, while agreements were reached with the federations and the government shortly before the Sweden match.
Alexia Potias, winner of the Ballon d’Or as the best player in the world, said in statements published by the Spanish newspaper “AS”: “We were only able to sleep for four hours last week because of all these conversations.”
Potias explained that her team strongly resisted the “systematic discrimination against women’s football over decades” before the “unacceptable” incident in the World Cup final.
She added: “We realized that it was impossible to be satisfied with being just football players.”
Botias continued: “We came here (the team camp) with anger but with great confidence that the agreements will make our sport and our society better.”
