The Spanish prosecutor’s office wants the Colombian singer Shakira to be sentenced to eight years and two months in prison for tax evasion, BTA reports, citing France Press and Pais.
According to the Spanish daily, the supervisory authority has drawn up an indictment in which it also demands a fine of 23 million euros on charges against the contractor in six crimes against the state budget. Shakira previously rejected a plea deal with prosecutors that would have helped avoid a trial.
The singer is suspected of crimes related to non-payment of taxes in the period between 2012 and 2014. The total amount amounts to 14.5 million euros. Prosecutors claimed that the Colombian singer lived most of the time in Barcelona, given her relationship with defender Gerard Pique of the Spanish football club of the same name.
The forty-five-year-old singer, whose real name is Shakira Ripoll, is known not only as a singer, but also as a songwriter, dancer, music producer, choreographer and model. She is considered one of the most prominent Latin American artists, having achieved success in both the Spanish-speaking and English-speaking music markets.
Shakira has a star on the Los Angeles Walk of Fame. The Colombian is also considered one of the best-selling artists of all time.
