The Spanish Parliament extends the state of emergency for six months

Spanish parliament on Thursday extended for six months a state of emergency declared to combat the sharp rise in coronavirus cases.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s left-wing government declared a 15-day initial state of emergency on Sunday, and the extension approved by lawmakers means it will run until May 9.

Thanks to these steps, the regional governments responsible for the health sector will be able to restrict the movement of people, also set night curfews and close regional borders.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the 14-day cumulative number of infections per 100,000 population in Spain on 29 October is 486.7.

In Spain’s neighboring country, Portugal, the figure is slightly lower, while in France it is higher. These are 362 and 680.6 cases respectively.
