The Spanish national team met again at their residence in the City of Football 50 days after being crowned champions of Euro 2024, to begin preparations for a new objective, to repeat success in the Nations League, with Óscar Mingueza, Pepelu, Robert Sánchez, Pau Torres, Aleix García and Yeremy Pino as new additions.
It was the first time for Mingueza and Pepelu, who were warmly welcomed by coach Luis de la Fuente and the members of the coaching staff upon entering the residence, and the return as internationals for Robert Sánchez, Pau, Aleix and Yeremy. The six new faces of Spain for the first two matches of the fourth edition of the Nations League, against Serbia and Switzerland, both away matches.
There are 19 players who were proclaimed European champions on July 14 in Berlin: David Raya, Álex Remiro, Dani Carvajal, Aymeric Laporte, Robin Le Normand, Dani Vivian, Marc Cucurella, Alejandro Grimaldo, Rodri Hernández, Martín Zubimendi, Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal, Joselu Mato and Ayoze Pérez.
Álvaro Morata, captain of the Spanish national team who will miss the Nations League matches against Serbia and Switzerland due to injury, visited the training camp at the Ciudad del Fútbol immediately after kick-off, when the internationals were sharing their first meal after arriving at the Ciudad del Fútbol late on Monday morning.
Morata’s gesture confirms what was announced by coach Luis de la Fuente and, after doubts about his continuity during the European Championship in Germany, the forward has decided to continue being part of the national team.
Despite being absent from the first two matches of the fourth edition of the Nations League due to a quadriceps muscle injury sustained with his new club, Milan, he did not want to miss the first moments of the training camp.
The captain, who hands over the armband to Rodri Hernández, arrived at the Ciudad del Fútbol residence at lunchtime and burst into the dining room after the warm reunion with De la Fuente. Very affectionate with all his teammates, Morata hugged the internationals one by one, and spoke with those with whom he has a closer relationship.
The aim of both Morata, who also had a one-match ban to serve, like Rodri, for some controversial chants during the European Championship on 15 July, and the coaching staff, is for his return to the national team to take place on 12 October, against Denmark. It will be the third match of the Nations League, the first that the Spanish team will play on its territory, in Murcia, as European champions after visits to Serbia and Switzerland.
