The Spanish guard rescued 208 migrants heading for Spanish territory by boat

Ships operated by the Spanish Coast Guard detected migrants in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. On vessels bound for the Canary Islands. there were 106 migrants, including 44 women and 20 minors. On four other vessels, 102 migrants tried to reach the Spanish mainland. In this second group, with one exception, there were only men.

Spain saw a 49 percent increase in illegal migration from January to August this year compared to the same period last year, according to the AP, the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. Of the 20,491 migrants who arrived on Spanish territory, most arrived by sea.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) states that about 500 people have died or are missing after trying to reach Spain. Organizations that provide assistance to migrants claim that there are in fact more deaths and missing persons, as not all shipwrecks or drowning are reported.
