The Soviet Union’s Misinterpretation of Boney M.’s Hit “Daddy Cool”

The favorite hit was not about that at all.

The group Boney M. enjoyed enormous popularity in the USSR in the 80s. Her hits were played in all discos, and the records of the German band were worth their weight in gold. But one of the compositions was especially loved by Soviet listeners. It seemed to many that it was sung in Russian.

This is not at all about the song Rasputin, as one might assume. The Russians’ favorite track was Daddy Cool. It’s not surprising if this name seems unfamiliar. After all, in the Soviet Union they knew the song under the name “Varvara fries chickens.”

These are the words that Russian-speaking fans heard in the hit.

In fact, no Varvara, of course, appears in the text. The popular song by Boney M. is called “Cool Daddy.” And those very words about fried chicken actually say:

“She’s crazy about this cool daddy.”

But Russians continue to hear words about cook Varya.
