“The Soviet Liberation of Graz: A Historical Account of Occupied Styria”

“The people of Graz hoped for the British. To the dismay of the population, however, it was the Red Army that liberated Graz as Austria’s last state capital and marched in on the night of May 9,” says Barbara Stelzl-Marx, contemporary historian and Head of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute (LBI) for research into the consequences of war. The Soviet troops stayed in Graz for ten weeks, only then did the entire Styria become a British zone of occupation. It is this period that will now be examined more closely in a research project.
