Dog as food is a very old culinary tradition in Southeast Asian countries such as China, Korea and Vietnam. In the 4th century BC, dog meat was recommended by the philosopher Mengzi.
Now South Korean President Moon Jae-in has proposed banning eating dogs in the country, reports BBC.
According to the channel, most Koreans have never eaten dog meat, and demand has fallen in recent years. Among other things, because more people started having dogs as pets.
At the same time, it is estimated that about one million dogs are slaughtered for food each year in South Korea.
– This new proposal has something to do with the generational change in the country, says professor of Korean studies at UiO, Vladimir Tikhonov to NRK, who first mentioned the case in Norway.
Among previous generations, dog meat was seen as a cheap and easy source of protein, according to the professor.
84 percent of South Koreans had never eaten dog meat or wanted to eat it again, a survey showed in 2020. In addition, 59 percent answered that they supported a ban on eating dogs, writes the BBC.
