MADRID, 22 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Ecuadorian Justice has issued this Friday preventive detention for 90 days for Sebastián Barreiro, son of the country’s vice president, Verónica Abad, dotted with a case of possible corruption due to influence peddling within the Vice Presidency.
According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, Carlos Alarcón, Barreiro had requested a percentage of the salary of a person whom he would facilitate working as Communications Coordinator of the Vice Presidency already under Abad’s mandate.
The Prosecutor’s Office indicates that Barreiro along with another defendant, an advisor to Vice President Abad, would have requested more than 50 percent of the salary of this official, who earned about $3,200 a month, according to information collected by Ecuavisa.
Thus, Justice has accepted the prosecutors’ request for processing and has indicated that Barreiro is “prosecuted for the alleged crime of offering influence peddling, as the direct perpetrator,” the Prosecutor’s Office reported on its social networks.
The team of lawyers for the vice president’s son have stated that they will appeal the decision so that he can defend himself in freedom, also ensuring that Barreiro never asked for or offered jobs within the Vice Presidency of Ecuador.
Barreiro was arrested on Thursday morning at his private home in Cuenca and was then transferred to Quito. The Prosecutor’s Office carried out a search of his office and a hotel in the north of the capital, the alleged scene of meetings.
