The son of a Belgian farmer could be the next agriculture commissioner – 2024-08-23 08:21:23

Christoph Hansen it might be the name of the next one Commissioner of Agriculture in the commission chaired for the second time by Ursula von der Leyen. Hansen is Luxembourg’s proposal for participation in the next European Commission, Prime Minister Luc Frieden said yesterday, Politico reports.

Frieden wrote on Platform X that he proposed Hansen “based on his background and extensive experience in EU affairs”.

Hansen responded that he was honored and humbled to be nominated.

Hansen, an EPP politician who won the European Parliament elections in June, has been suggested as a potential candidate for the agriculture portfolio and has also been linked to trade.

“I’m a farmer’s son and brother,” he told Politico earlier this summer when asked if he would be interested in the job of EU agriculture chief.

Hansen takes a seat in the Luxembourg Parliament in 2023, where he sits on the Agriculture Committee. He was previously a member of the European Parliament’s International Trade Committee (INTA), where he led negotiations on the bloc’s rules on deforestation.

Hansen’s nomination means 16 men have been nominated for the next Commission, compared to just six women, including von der Leyen herself.

The Commission President has asked EU leaders to give her a choice between a male and a female commissioner to build a gender-balanced team.
