“The interests of police officers in their social part must be guaranteed, but a visible deadline for reforms and changes in the Ministry of Internal Affairs must also be outlined.” This was stated by the deputy chairman of BSP LEFT BULGARIA Atanas Merdzhanov in the BNT studio. He is adamant that the responsibility for the protests of the policemen lies with the rulers and they must find a solution. “We have stated that we support the social rights of police officers,” he added.
“The BSP left a meeting of an internal committee because we do not agree with the way the budget procedure is conducted,” explained Merdzhanov. According to him, a few days after Bulgaria is faced with the biggest social protest – of the policemen, and many people ask themselves the question whether we have a state, it is proper to demand the presence of the interior and the finance minister at such a heated meeting. “They told us that they wouldn’t be. This budget for the next year for all departments was adopted by consensus in the Council of Ministers, and there is no way to justify that they did not know”, he is categorical. The vice-chairman of the BSP LEFT BULGARIA is of the opinion that the rulers hoped that such a text would pass and that the policemen would not notice. “Many things passed, despite the disapproval of society and certain political forces. But the tension spilled over and that didn’t happen,” he added. Merdzhanov is adamant that not a single reform has been carried out in the Ministry of Internal Affairs for this one year, despite the declared intentions at the beginning of this mandate.
“Borisov and Tsvetanov are the people who have been in this ministry and in the security authorities since 2001. They rule the country. Are they not aware of the budget of the Ministry of the Interior, what should be done in order to free up funds for the policemen to carry out their duties and be at the service of the citizens, order and peace”, asked the representative of the people. He recalled that there was a similar protest in the middle of the year, to which the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Finance “turned a deaf ear”. “They had enough time and any excuses in this regard are not valid,” he added.
Atanas Merdzhanov emphasized that the budgets of DANS, the State Commission for Information Security, the Military Information Service, are almost as much as they were in 2015, and that for the NSO has been increased by 2 million. “We ask what this requires?” It does not sound logical that there is no money for the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Intelligence, but that the budget of the NSO should be increased,” he explained.
On the occasion of the upcoming plenum of the BSP, the spokesperson of the party commented that it is the single most democratic and most public political force. “There is going to be a heavy analysis of the plenum on the results of the elections. Before looking into the question of responsibility and resignations, it is necessary to assess the contribution of each party organization in the country. I hope for a responsible discussion”, concluded Atanas Merdzhanov.
