The social commitment that always beats in cepsa

Social commitment has always been a priority at Cepsa. The company, one of the largest in the Canary Islands, invests in social commitment and innovation, the great drivers of productivity, inclusive economic growth and job creation. Cepsa, which has been ensuring the strategic energy supply of the Canary Islands by land, sea and air for nine decades, has been committed from its origins to the sustainable social progress of its workers and island society.

The company is involved in initiatives that help people and their environments, adapting to the needs of the Archipelago –as it does in other regions– and helping its development through numerous projects. An important part of this effort is carried out through Fundación Cepsa. Created in 2016 precisely to structure and homogenize the social action that the company had historically been developing in those areas where it has a greater presence and relations with the community, such as the Canary Islands, Fundación Cepsa has continued to work on its objective of reinforcing its voluntary responsibility with society Canary Islands, promoting initiatives despite the limitations imposed by the health crisis, which has forced the entity to modify part of its programming to adapt it to the security protocols required by the covid-19 pandemic.

Under this mission, the Foundation benefited a total of 16,253 people directly in the Archipelago through its actions in 2020, by promoting 40 actions in the social, scientific-educational, environmental, cultural and sports fields, to which allocated an investment of 309,421 euros and that managed to indirectly reach more than 48,700 islanders.

Social Value Awards

The most relevant action is the Social Value Awards. The five projects awarded in the last edition of 2020 –Amate, Funcasor, Atelsam, Aspercan and Afedes– will be added to the other 50 that have been selected by the Fundación Cepsa Social Value Awards since its launch in the Canary Islands 13 years ago and to which a total of 495,000 euros has been allocated. The main objective: to combat social inequality, promote inclusion and improve the well-being of the most disadvantaged population.

The projects for the Cepsa Social Value Awards 2020 will focus on breast cancer (Amate Tenerife), functional diversity (Canary Foundation for People with Deafness and their families, Funcasor), severe mental disorder (Tinerfeña Association de Salud Mental, Atelsam), Asperger syndrome (Asociación Asperger Islas Canarias, Aspercan) and in people especially vulnerable as a result of the crisis caused by covid-19 (Afedes, Asociación para el Fomento de la Formación, el Empleo, la Information and North Development). In its 16 editions (13 in the Canary Islands), the Social Value Awards have distributed more than 3.5 million euros in Spain, Portugal, Colombia and Brazil. The motto of these awards describes their function very well: “At Fundación Cepsa we give solidarity ideas the value they deserve”.

Food Bank

The coronavirus pandemic and its health and economic consequences have not only implied the redesign of social programs, but has also forced the reinforcement of objectives. For example, pay special attention to donations to the Food Banks of Tenerife and Las Palmas, to which 117,000 euros were allocated between various actions, which allowed the distribution of some 65,000 kilos of food. A first action at the beginning of the confinement was carried out to respond to a request for urgent need of help from the Federation of Food Banks of Spain (Fesbal). Cepsa gave aid to the Canarian food banks and developed other subsequent actions: fuel cards (Gran Recogida), contributions to the Las Palmas Food Bank for the 6 soup kitchens in the capital of Gran Canaria and other contributions to the Tenerife Food Bank for its distribution among the NGOs in charge of distributing the food.

Science and education

In the field of science and education, the most outstanding performance of Cepsa in the Canary Islands was the intense activity of the Cepsa Foundation Chair for Innovation and Energy Efficiency at the University of La Laguna (ULL). It included:

The objective is to recognize academic works that have been presented at the University of La Laguna and that stand out for their special originality and quality in the study of the energy use of waste and the circular economy.

– In addition, the Chair’s website was launched, an online master class was held, collaboration began with the Teidesat student project (future launch of a nanosatellite into space) and the first steps of the LORAwan Project were taken to bring the internet closer. of things to students.

Cultural scope

Cepsa is also very aware of culture. It should be noted as the main activity that the Cepsa Foundation continued working on its Immerse yourself in Santa Cruz initiative, culminating in the mural on San Francisco Javier Street in January, at the same time that the procedures began to develop the next artistic creation on Avenida de San Sebastián, whose execution will begin next Monday. The objective is the creation of a large-format outdoor urban art route in the capital of Tenerife. This initiative has added 21 murals since its launch in 2012, in which 18 artists have already participated.

Environment and grassroots sport

The Foundation also promotes environmental awareness and conservation initiatives, such as those developed in collaboration with the Sustainable Santa Cruz Foundation, among which are the Anaga guided hiking trails on foot, the school’s Pequehuertos, family visits to the Palmétum, activities of environmental volunteering for the underwater and terrestrial cleaning of the coastline, the non-competitive mountain solidarity race Anaga Trail Solidaria….

In the sports field, focused on grassroots sports, the Cepsa Foundation promotes grassroots sports with grants such as the Fundación Cepsa-Santa Cruz children’s basketball schools, or the multisport campuses during school holidays, actions in collaboration with the Santa Cruz Basketball Club .

Cepsa professionals

Cepsa professionals and their families also join the social challenge with Voluntas, Fundación Cepsa’s corporate volunteering program in which they participate in voluntary initiatives in accordance with the commitment to generating a positive social and environmental impact.
