The Snow Society: Hispanic Hope at Academy Awards overshadowed by English production on Holocaust

All Hispanic eyes were on “The Snow Society”, the film about the survivors of the Andes that, in terms of popularity, was the greatest hope of our community at the Academy Awards ceremony that is taking place currently at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

After all, in addition to being a Spanish production, it is a work whose cast is completely made up of Uruguayan and Argentine actors. And its fame has not been affected at all by the fact that it is part of the Netflix offering, a platform that, despite the changes it has undergone over time, maintains the highest acceptance rates in the entire world.

However, beyond what some enthusiastic analysts might say, JA Bayona’s work was not the favorite, unlike what was happening with “The Zone of Interest”, the renowned English production about the Holocaust that ended up taking home the Oscar for Best International Film and which has been massively recognized for its artistic qualities.

The award was announced by Dwayne Johnson and Bad Bunny. The latter initially offered a brief message – and obviously previously written – that was in Spanish, but later, when announcing the winner, he initially made a mistake with the English words that he had to read. He had to be forgiven for any mistakes, since, as “The Rock” said, today is his birthday: he has just entered his third decade of life.

“The Snow Society” also had no luck when it came to its second nomination, corresponding to the Best Makeup and Hairstyling section, which would have favored the Spaniards Ana López-Puigcerver, David Martí and Montse Ribé. In this case, the Oscar went to the “Poor Things” staff, made up of Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Josh Weston.
