“The Smile” Baltic Debut: Radiohead’s Tom York and Johnny Greenwood to Perform in Sigulda Ruins on August 13, 2023

The concert agency “L Tips Agency” has come out with almost unbelievable news: on August 13, the famous “Radiohead” members Tom York and Johnny Greenwood’s group “The Smile” will perform on the stage of the ruins of Sigulda! It has been one of the most relevant bands for music connoisseurs for a couple of years now.

This will be “The Smile”‘s first and, for now, only concert in the Baltic States. It is planned that it will play the hits of both of the group’s albums – the debut and the one that will be released at the end of January. Advance ticket sales for Entertainment Mail subscribers begin on Wednesday, January 10, and public ticket sales begin at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The first public performance of “The Smile” was a live stream of Glastonbury Festival in May 2021, followed by three concerts in London. In the spring of 2022, the band’s debut album A Light For Attracting Attention, produced by Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, was released.

The composition of “The Smile” consists of the creative core of the cult group “Radiohead” – Tom York (vocals, guitar, bass, keys) and Johnny Greenwood (guitar, bass, keys), as well as various groups, including the jazz group “Sons of Kemet” drummer and percussionist Tom Skinner. The name of the project is taken from a poem by the British poet and writer Ted Hughes, but the group was born during the pandemic, when it was difficult to make music together. Greenwood recalls, “We didn’t have much time, but we wanted to finish some songs together. It was quite complicated, but at the same time a great way to make music.” Radiohead drummer Philip Selway adds that it’s healthy to dabble in other projects from time to time to explore “what other musical voices can do with your ideas.”

In the spring of 2023, the members of “The Smile” revealed that they started writing new sound material. The first single ‘Bending Hectic’ was released on June 20 and features the London Contemporary Orchestra. On November 13, the band announced that their second album will be called “Wall of Eyes” and will be released on January 26, 2024. On the same day, the audience was introduced to the second single, which is given the title of the album.

Some music critics refer to “The Smile” as the reincarnation of “Radiohead” (I wouldn’t want to agree with that) or a new facet that fuses a bit of post-punk, progressive rock, afrobeat and neo-electronica. Most agree that the side project label allows Radiohead’s creative tandem, Yorke and Greenwood, to write much more free material: “It was a chance to work on some tunes without the pressure of being ‘Radiohead’ Lennon and McCartney,” or, perhaps more accurately, [“Pink Floyd”] Waters and Gilmore, which may have upset the other three members of the group.”
