Read more >Scholars specializing in the late Middle Ages and the Low Countries provide reading keys to grasp the essence of Johan Huizinga’s Autumn of the Middle Ages. Still relevant for its impressive power of suggestion, the masterpiece by the great Dutch intellectual, published in 1919 and translated into French in 1932, is aimed at all those – literary scholars, philosophers, historians and art historians – who have been able to identify in this book another way of thinking and writing the history of the northern 15th century. Particularly focused on forms of life and thought, Huizinga’s writing can be disconcerting for an audience of researchers attached to a more rational methodology. The reflections gathered here allow us to take stock of the reasons that make this work, controversial as it may be, a reference but also a treasure trove of inspirations and intuitions that are still as stimulating after a century of existence.Read less >
