“The Smell of a New Phone: Unboxing the Motorola Edge 40 and Edge 40 Pro”

It’s no secret that manufacturers of all kinds of products, including electronics, try to make the user experience as pleasant as possible, including the unboxing itself. In addition to “experiential unboxing”, which you will encounter for example with ROG Phones, which have an original box shape and use augmented reality, the recent trend is to cut down the packaging in the name of an environmental approach. Although the trend was started by Apple, who was first mocked by everyone (and then followed by the main rival, Samsung, just as it was once the case with the 3.5mm jack), today the standard for mid-range and high-end phones is an empty box rather than a full one. Sony probably went the farthest in this regard, which no longer even includes a data/charging cable in the package, and the purchase of the necessary accessories is fully under the responsibility of the customer.

During the testing (especially unboxing) of the new flagship Motorola Edge 40 Pro, which is probably the most interesting flagship in terms of price/performance ratio, or the recently introduced Motorola Edge 40, I noticed something else.

When the phone smells like new

The packaging of the two Motorola phones mentioned above is of course made of recycled paper, uses natural soy ink and everything else that we are used to in phones of this class. The packaging is also rich in content, as you will find a phone, a case, a cable, but also an adapter which, thanks to the support of the popular Power Delivery standard, you can use to charge a laptop or other electronics. However, what surprised me the most is the subtle perfume that you can smell after unpacking.

The concept of the smell of a new car may one day be complemented by the smell of a new mobile phone.

Many of you will surely remember the perfuming of Apple products, after all, you can still buy a candle on the Internet with the scent of a new MacBook and the like, but the smell of Motorola is new. I don’t know if this is an intention or just a by-product of the production processor of the box or individual packaging materials. The smell is quite strong, but it doesn’t give me the impression that it’s an industrial glue perfume or something similar.

In any case, smell is an important sense that plays an important role, and who knows, just as the term “smell of a new car” has become familiar, maybe in the future we will regularly talk about the “smell of a new mobile phone”.
