While Apple’s new Studio Display screen is facing mixed reviews, in particular because of its price, Samsung has presented a new screen that could position itself as an alternative for some users. the Smart Monitor M8 is a 32″ 4K screen in 16:9 format with a design that is very similar to that of the iMac M1 and some well-thought-out features, such as Wi-Fi connection and AirPlay 2 support or the functionality of Smart TV allowing to launch applications (including Apple TV) with the remote control without the screen being connected to a computer, without forgetting the voice assistants Alexa and Bixby. There is also an optional webcam which clips on the back , a USB-C hub and a height-adjustable stand.
In several respects, the Smart Monitor M8 is inferior to the Studio Display. The pixel density is much lower (4K on 32″ instead of 5K on 27″, i.e. 138 dpi instead of 218 dpi) as is the brightness (400 nits instead of 600 nits), and the hub is less provided (one micro-HDMI port and two USB-C ports instead of four USB-C ports) with lower power (60 W instead of 96 W) insufficient for the 16″ MacBook Pro. Only here, the Smart Monitor M8 is sold for €749, a thousand euros less than Apple’s Studio Display without its height-adjustable stand, without AirPlay and without Smart TV… On the other hand, you will need a little patience before getting your hands on it: it is referenced at Amazon but without stock at the moment.
