If I want to meet this species, I often sit on the pier built at Sárosfői lakes at dawn and do nothing but wait. In the meantime, I see a lot of things, but the biggest experience here is my dwarf. In July, chicks are often fed. This makes it easier to meet them as they move from one reed edging to another.
The dwarf moth is our smallest heron, with a hidden lifestyle, so seeing it is a real sensation for the birdie. It always flies low over the reeds with even wing blows. In this case, the bright spot on the wings is most striking. Males, laying hens and young are of different colors and wear feathers that are well separable. He doesn’t avoid people, he often spends at lakes in urban areas, I have already found pairs of poets at the Boating Lake in Sárvár. In mild springs, the first specimens appear as early as the last half of April, but often only return in the first week of May. Winter is spent in sub-Saharan Africa. The males, after hearing a dense and long repetitive “hogh” sound, begin to immediately identify the generally distant ones. The nest is built by the male from rancid reeds, low into the reeds, less frequently in the reeds. The hen lays 5-7 eggs. Additional costs may be extended to August.
It feeds on frogs, newts, small fish, horsehair, spiders, aquatic insects and their larvae. Its population in Europe is around 60-120 thousand pairs, with the largest numbers nesting in Romania and Ukraine. So if you want to meet this amazing heron, all you have to do is silently contemplate the edge of a fishing pond or fishpond at a beautiful dawn.
It is a highly protected bird species, its value in monetary terms is half a million forints.
