Slovak female basketball players advanced to the June European Championships in Slovenia and Israel. Coach Juraj Suja’s team won the final match of the qualifying H-group, winning 114:59 over Luxemburg on Sunday at the Diplomat Arena in Piešťany.

In this meeting, the Slovaks needed to win in order to think about progressing among the 16 best teams on the “old continent”. They fulfilled their task and, considering the development in the other groups, it was clear after the end of the match that they would not miss one of the four places for the second-placed teams.

Slovakia’s national team will appear at the final tournament 13 times in the era of independence, the last time it occupied the 13th position. This year’s European Championship will take place in Ljubljana and Tel Aviv.

From the Slovakian point of view, the decisive duel of the ME 2023 qualification began quite openly and in a significantly offensive spirit. As expected, Etute was the biggest problem on the Luxembourg side, but coach Juraj Suja’s team could rely on the productive duo of Stašová and Mištinová.

The local basketball players clearly had the upper hand in the game, and this was also reflected in their leadership. The first quarter was played superbly by Mištinová in particular, with her significant contribution, the lead after the first quarter was almost double-digit – 28:19. In the second, the Slovenians continued to play lightly, they dominated the scoreboard without significant problems. Luxembourg could not put up any significant pressure, on the contrary, in the middle of this 10-minute period, Páleníková made it 47:25 after a three-pointer. Buknová gave the perfect score after the first half, adjusting to 58:30 almost at the same time as the horn.

The Slovaks did not let up even after the break, they continued to confidently pursue victory and advancement to the European Championship. Páleníková also contributed to the great offensive production, with great ease she got the lead over the 40-point mark. Little by little, even the less used representative women could get space, so that they could gain valuable experience on the international scene. Tarkovičová’s successful three free throws put a full stop at the end of the third part, with them she adjusted the score to 93:47. The final quarter could be played in a relaxed spirit, Mištinová, the home team’s top scorer, took care of overcoming the 100-point mark.
