The Slovak under-20 national team will definitely be without Juraj Slafkovský, Šimon Nemec, Filip Mešár, Samuel Kňažek, Martin Chromiak and Marko Stach at the junior world championship in Canada. On Monday, the portal hockeyslovakia.sk reported about it.
The two highest drafted NHL players, Slafkovski and the German, were not released for the World Cup by their new overseas employers, the Montreal Canadiens and the New Jersey Devils, respectively. Knežek, Chromiak and Stacha will not be allowed to participate in the championship due to their poor health.
The Slovak nomination is thus approaching its final form. At Monday’s meeting, the second in the final phase of preparation, goalkeeper Rastislav Elias and forwards Jakub Demek and Maroš Jedlička reported to the coaches, who despite a long-term absence after knee surgery wants to fight for participation in the WC.
Head coach Ivan Feneš welcomed a total of 28 hockey players to Poprad. As many as sixteen of them (Faith, Demek, Elias, Myklucha, Bakala, Boľo, Kašlík, Bečár, Krajč, Petrovický, Jedlička, Petrovský, Štrbák, Dvorský, Lašák, Sýkora) also played at the December world championship, which was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. Jedlička’s start did not look promising due to long-term rehabilitation after a knee injury, which he sustained in last season’s extraleague play-off. However, the nineteen-year-old forward started training and came to Poprad after an agreement with coach Feneš.
Goalkeeper Elias, who returned from the rookie camp of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was also added to the nomination list. On the contrary, Šimon Latkóczy is missing from it. In the following week, he will also attend a camp overseas, after which he will join the national team on August 2, the day of its arrival in Canada.
“We narrowed down the nominations from the first camp, if I include Šimon Latkóczy, to 29 names, which, in the opinion of the coaching staff, represent the best that we have available in Slovakia given all the current circumstances. We had to eliminate several boys and, I confess, it was one of the most difficult decisions in my career. However, from the team we have chosen, we feel great energy and desire to succeed at the World Cup.” Feneš told hockeyslovakia.sk.

Another new face at Monday’s meeting was assistant coach Scott Moser. The thirty-three-year-old coach also completed the December championship in Canada with the Slovak junior national team. In the position of consultant, he focused primarily on scouting the opponents who were waiting for the Slovaks in the basic phase. He will already be a regular assistant to the head coach at the summer championship. Moser arrived in Slovakia on Sunday.
“I am very happy that Scott is in Slovakia. He could have stayed at home in the United States and joined us only after arriving in Canada, which would have been much easier from a logistical point of view. However, Scott really wanted to fly to Slovakia, to be at the birth of the final nomination , to get along with the team and go through a proper training unit with him. We really appreciate it and look forward to working with him again.” said Fenes.
The team is waiting for the second five-day preparatory block for the junior championship from Monday to Friday. At the end of the week on Sunday, the expedition will meet again in Bratislava, where it will undergo the last phase of final preparation. On Tuesday, August 2, he will subsequently fly from Vienna to Frankfurt and from there directly to the venue of the Summer WC in Edmonton.
In it, the Slovaks should play two preliminary matches against the Germans and the Swiss. They will enter the world championship on August 9 at 20:00 CET with a duel against the Czech Republic. Subsequently, at exactly midnight from August 11 to 12, they will play against Canada, 24 hours later, ie at midnight from August 12 to 13, against Latvia. They will finish their action in the basic B-group on August 14 at 20:00 CEST against Finland.
