The company added in a statement: Monitoring data shows that a new outburst has occurred on comet 29P / Schwassmann-Wachman, as it recorded on Nov. 22, 2022, an increase in brightness of more than 4 times, which is the second most largest explosion in a comet in more than 10 years.
And the association continued: This event reminds us of what happened with comet 17P / Holmes in the year 2007, when it unexpectedly exploded, which led to its brightness a million times, until it became visible to the eye naked and the coma of the comet has expanded, i.e. the layer of dust and gas surrounding the nucleus of the comet, which is larger than Jupiter and within 3 weeks has become larger than the Sun itself.
The cause of the comet’s explosion
The association indicated that the cause of that explosion is believed to have occurred in an ice cave hundreds of meters under the crust of the comet’s amorphous-to-crystalline nucleus, which releases enough heat during the transition to detonate the comet. .
In the middle of last month, a comet fell directly towards the sun as the sun emitted a brilliant coronal mass ejection, a luminous cloud of ionized gas, into space.
The comet was a member of the Creutz family, the patroness of the sun, which are fragments of the disintegration of a giant comet several centuries ago, and was named after the German astronomer Heinrich Creutz, who studied it in detail in the 19th century.
