The Sky in 2024: Meteor Showers, Solar Eclipse, and Other Extraordinary Phenomena

The sky can conjure up incredible phenomena, and it has prepared several of them for this year as well. Right in the Czech Republic, people will be able to watch a number of beautiful meteor showers throughout the year. For example, it will be necessary to go abroad for a solar eclipse.

The sky in 2024 will bring a lot of interesting phenomena. “A relatively extraordinary astronomical phenomenon is taking place right now, namely the maximum of the Quadrantid meteor shower. This is one of the three strongest meteor showers,” described Pavel Suchan from the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic at Thursday’s Breakfast.

Unfortunately, the maximum of this phenomenon was at 10 o’clock in the morning, when it was already light, but it was also cloudy at night, and nature prepared us for this spectacle. However, other phenomena that the universe has prepared for this year could improve our mood.

Among other things, two more meteor showers will follow. In addition to the mentioned Quadrantids, it will be the Perseids in August and the Geminids in December. The best is to come in September. “Definitely the most fundamental phenomenon is the partial eclipse of the moon on the night of September 17 to 18. It will also be at the time of the so-called super full moon,” said Suchan.

We could also expect comets. “On the way to the Sun and the Earth, we have comet C2023A3, which may become a comet visible to the eye in the fall,” said the expert, adding that comets are often treacherous and predicting their tracking is risky.

The Sun also prepared interesting phenomena. “I would draw attention to observations during the day. This year, the Sun will probably reach its maximum solar activity, which means a large number of large spots visible to the eye,” said Suchan. Due to the increased activity of the Sun, for example, there can be aurora borealis here too.

We will wait for the solar eclipse

For ordinary people, one of the most interesting phenomena, the total eclipse of the Sun, will not be in our territory until October 7, 2135. However, this year, on April 8, this phenomenon will take place across the North American continent, so those interested can take a trip to the United States of America. To whom it seems far, in the years 2026 and 2027 there will be total eclipses in Spain.

The ideal place to observe similar phenomena is to be as far away from civilization as possible, where we will not be disturbed by light pollution. According to Suchan, the very best place is the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
