Lars Ulrik Mortensen, dirigent

In the program: concertos grossi by Arcangelo Corelli, Georg Friedrich Handel and Georg Muffat

The Baroque Orchestra of the European Union is a unique formation that embodies in music the idea of the harmony of nations. Over the years of its existence, the orchestra has visited more than 53 countries in Europe and Asia, and nearly 700 talented young musicians have started their successful careers by participating in its composition. In 2012, its members represented Germany, Spain, Hungary, Great Britain, Austria, etc. conducted by Lars Ulrik Mortensen, Riccardo Minazzi, Paul Anyu. The guest concertmasters are the Bulgarian Zefira Valova, Hugh Daniel from Wales, and for the concert on the stage of the BAROQUE ART festival – the Croatian Boyan Cicic. The program is constructed around the work of Arcangelo Corelli, who set new European standards in the instrumental music of Europe at the turn of the 18th century in Rome. Influenced by him, two Germans – Handel and Muffat surpassed their idol and gave the musical world works that became a symbol of the Baroque.

“Apotheosis of Bach”

Aapo Hakkinen – harpsichord
Zefira Valova – violin
Alexis Kosenko – flute

In the program: solo and trio sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach is the name most often associated with Baroque music. His genius bore fruit – hundreds of vocal and instrumental works of unsurpassed compositional mastery and emotional impact. He mastered complex polyphonic genres, often denounced as old-fashioned by his contemporaries, but also pioneered new ones such as the obbligato (written) bass sonata. These are some of the sonatas selected by the three instrumentalists in the current program.
A true luxury in European musical history is that a genius has several sons of genius. Among them, Carl Philipp Emanuel stands out for combining everything he had learned from his father with the aesthetics of the gallant style coming into vogue in the mid-18th century. The gallant trios in the program reveal a full palette of affects and colors: from stormy passions and energetic Allegri to melancholic and sorrowful slow movements, presented by the three soloists with deep knowledge and wisdom.

Bayaderes – opera by Charles Simon Cattel (concert performance)

Solamente naturali & Musica florea

Didier Talpin, conductor (France)

In 1810, the opera “Bayaderes” by the French composer Cattel was presented for the first time at the Paris Opera. Napoleon was also present at the premiere, but with his pretentious temperament, he forced the orchestra players to play muted throughout the performance to please his taste.
On the festival stage, this 3-act opera will be performed in concert on period instruments by two temperamental ensembles from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The solo parts are performed by distinguished French singers, and they are accompanied by the National Philharmonic Choir “Svetoslav Obretenov”.
