KONTAN.CO.ID – ROMA. The number of deaths from the corona virus in Italy surpassed the 100,000 mark on Monday (8/3/2021). Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi warned that the pandemic situation in the country is getting worse with a surge in the number of patients in hospitals.

Launch Reuters, Italy is the seventh country in the world to reach a bleak milestone due to the Covid-19 pandemic, after the United States, Brazil, Mexico, India, Russia and the United Kingdom.

The health ministry said 318 new deaths from the disease had been recorded in the past 24 hours bringing the total number of deaths since the epidemic hit the country 13 months ago to 100,103. It took Italy nine months to record its first 50,000 deaths, and it took only 3.5 months to double the number.

Data Reuters shows, the corona infection rate rose 23% in the last week compared to the previous week. Not only that, Italian health officials have warned that the country is facing a spike in new cases as the more infectious variant of the disease, first detected in Britain, continues to increase.

“The pandemic is not over yet, but with the acceleration of the vaccine plan, the solution is not far away,” he said in his first public remarks since taking office last month as quoted. Reuters.

Like other EU countries, Italy’s vaccination campaign started slowly, partly influenced by delays in shipments from drug manufacturers.

On Monday (8/3/2021) morning, 5.42 million vaccine shots had been made. Thus, 1.65 million of Italy’s 60 million population have received the two recommended doses. The government is considering switching tactics to prioritize the first dose over stockpiling the second.

The health ministry said there were 687 new hospital admissions over the past 24 hours, up from 443 on Sunday. The total number of intensive care patients increased by 95, to 2,700.

Italy is the first Western country to be hit by Covid-19. New cases fell sharply during the summer, but a second wave hit the country in the fall.
