Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Amid rising tensions in the region, the Foreign Minister China, Wang Yi, stated that Beijing would not be afraid to face United States of America.
“If there is a confrontation (against the US), (China) will not be afraid, and will fight to the end,” Wang Yi said while delivering the speech as quoted Reuters, Monday (20/12).
Wang stated that the recent tension between the two countries was due to the United States’ “strategy error”.
However, Wang said that China would welcome if the US wanted mutually beneficial cooperation.
Wang considered, there is nothing wrong if the two countries are involved in the competition. However, the race between the two countries should be a positive thing.
Relations between China and the US are strained over a variety of issues, ranging from mutual accusations of the origins of Covid-19, trade, human rights, to Beijing’s pressure on Taiwan.
During a telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the phone last November, US President Joe Biden emphasized the case for human rights.
Xi also warned America that China would respond to any provocation in Taiwan.
So far, China has claimed that Taiwan is part of their territory. However, Taiwan insists on independence.
China is always angry when a country has relations with Taiwan. The US itself reportedly provides support to Taiwan’s military, both from weapons and the formation of the quality of its human resources.
Recently, China has stepped up its pressure on Taiwan. They often intimidate by deploying fighter jets to the Taiwan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
In addition to the Taiwan issue, human rights issues also trigger tensions between the US and China. Last week, the United States Senate banned imports from China’s Xinjiang region.
The move was taken because China is considered to have committed acts of human rights violations, such as applying forced labor to the Uighur Muslim minority in Xinjiang.
