The Sitov inscription is an illegible inscription in the Rhodope Mountains from runic characters of an unknown script. This inscription has no analogue in the history of our lands.
The inscription was carved on a smoothed piece of rock in the form of a horizontal band approximately 3.4 meters long and 23–30 cm wide.
The rock massif on which the inscription is carved rests on five stones. An image of the Mother Goddess from the Neolithic era is recognized on one of them, and another one of the stones is likened to an hourglass.
Several main hypotheses for the authorship of the inscription have been put forward – Thracian, Celtic, Gothic, Sarmatian-Alan and Slavic. According to the Thracian hypotheses, the inscription used either the Thracians’ own runic characters or the alphabet of the Besians, created by Bishop Nikitas Remesianski. The Gothic hypothesis, like most other hypotheses, connects the inscription with the runes, and not with the Gothic alphabet created in these lands by Bishop Wulfila.
The artifact is located near the picturesque Rhodope village of Sitovo, only 32 km away. from Plovdiv. It was discovered by Dr. Alexander Peev, chairman of the Plovdiv Archaeological Society in 1928, who was taken there by local forest officials.
The “Sitovsky inscription” is located 1 km away from the Shtuda town area. It is very likely that the inscription is synchronous with the fortress, the sanctuary and the settlement.
In 1893, the Bulgarian ethnographer and folklorist Stoyu Shishkov made a description of the village of Sitovo, in which he mentioned that immediately after the village, 30 minutes away, there is the “Stuta grada steep”, about which there are various legends from old times, about many large stone caves and carved in the rocks “images of men and of other animals, inscribed even in their whole image, such as a serpent inscribed, a man, and the like”.
