According to the media, the musician succumbed to Covid-19. His band became famous all over the world for the hit Gyöngyhajú lány, which Czechs may also know as White Dove or Girl with pearls in her hair.
The sad news was announced via social networks by the Omega group, whose face Kóbor had been for many years. “We would like to inform you that János Kóbor, the founder of the Omega Award-winning band Omega, the winner of the Franz Liszt Prize, died after a short illness. Millions of fans loved him at home and abroad,” said the band members. “Mecky will stay in our hearts forever,” they added.
The musician died at the clinic of cardiovascular diseases, where he was transported in mid-November. According to Hungarian media, he succumbed to Covid-19. The portal informs about it, for example Glance.
Korb refused coronavirus vaccination because he trusted his own immunity. In an interview shortly before his death, he revealed that he had not refused vaccines. However, he himself had never been more seriously ill in his life and enjoyed good health, so he believed that he would cope with coronavirus.
The Omega Group was founded in September 1962 and its success extended beyond the borders of Hungary. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was popular in what was then Czechoslovakia, as well as in Poland and the countries of the former Yugoslavia. But she also gave concerts in England and Germany.
The band’s most famous hit is the song Gyöngyhajú lány, which was sung in 1995 by the group Scorpions under the name White Dove. She made her famous all over the world. However, the melody also enchanted the Czech singer Aleš Bricht, who created a new version of this hit called The Girl with Pearls in Her Hair.
