Mary Parrado has all the qualities to grow in the world of music: an incredible voice, attitude, friendliness and an amazing naturalness. He won ‘La Voz Kids’ at the age of 12 and now, at 20, he presents ‘Conmigo’, a much more adult album where she has participated as co-author in all the songs. She has also moved from her beloved Chiclana to Madrid, where she shares a flat in a city that has allowed her to take that leap of maturity.

Maria, how did you start composing?
I launched myself because I did it together with my friend Gonzalo Hermida, whom I have known for years. In this process there was a moment when my head clicked and I told him that I was going to start writing with other people. I remember when they called me to tell me that they had closed a session with Andrés Suárez. Wow, I got super nervous, imagine opening up to someone you don’t know… But thanks to this trip, I’m in a very nice creative moment.

“Since my father, someone fundamental in my life, is missing, I still have more desire to fight for music”

What are we going to find in this new album?
Of everything. Without intending to, I have managed to make the album transmit many states of mind. I was clear that I wanted the first song to be ‘A mí’, which is a message of loving oneself. Sometimes we forget and it is important that we remember it when we falter.

There is also a song, ’71’, dedicated to your father (he passed away in 2017). Has music served you as therapy?
Completely. Music always accompanies me. In the bad times, in the beautiful ones, when I fall in love, in the pandemic… Since my father, someone fundamental in my life, is missing, I still want to fight for music more.

You haven’t been on stage in a long time. You will want to tour.
Many! I hope it’s like riding a bicycle (laughs).

You started in this as a child. Has music robbed you of part of your youth?
When you are little and you dedicate yourself to this, it is very important how your parents behave with you, the environment you have. I remember that when I won ‘La Voz Kids’, my father had an adult conversation with me. He told me: “Do you know that from now on your life is going to change? Now this is a job and you are going to have some responsibilities. Maybe you are going to miss things and maybe you don’t feel like it. You can not do it and go back House”. I started to cry thinking, “Now what do I do? Do I say no if it’s what I like?”. I really appreciate that we had that talk.

“You have to go to the children’s edition of ‘La Voz’ to play, to have a good time”

And what would you say to children who want to participate in this program?
I would tell them that you have to go to the children’s edition of ‘La Voz’ to play, to have a good time. Nothing more. I’ve been on a Canal Sur program as a jury and you could perfectly notice the children who had their parents behind them with the “come on, you have to win”.

It is a very unstable profession. Have you ever thought about throwing in the towel?
Well, yes, although I know that music will accompany me all my life, even if it’s not in front of people. I have my piano in the living room and I am the happiest person in the world playing. But I am also realistic. Now I have come to Madrid and study Interpretation and Marketing and Advertising. An artist has to have plan a, b, c and d. It is a very difficult world and there are things that do not depend on you.

“I’m very stubborn, I have my character”

Do you think you have to prove more for having started so young?
Yes, I feel like I have to show the public that change from a girl to a woman. It is something that worries me and frustrates me because I don’t know how to do it. In the end, if I didn’t dedicate myself to music, I wouldn’t have to show my friends that change, it’s a process that is seen in a natural way. In the end we all have our essence, we are what we project. I know that I have an image of being very sweet, innocent… Ok, I can be like that, but you still need to see the other 50 percent: I am very stubborn, I have my character, things are quite clear. But how do I prove that? This is something that has been on my mind a lot lately.

You have moved to Madrid, how did you experience this process?
At first it was like a flan. I thought I wasn’t going to be able to, I was very dependent on my mother, but look, three days later I was in my element. Before the pandemic, I had plans every day and I always said yes (laughs). I was wandering around all day.

And how do you keep in touch with your mother and with your family?
I’m the girl on the phone, I look like a switchboard. We talk three or four times a day, I get along super well with her.

    Have you become cooks now?
If the truth. Before coming to Madrid I wrote down all the recipes from my two grandmothers. When my roommates want to spoon, I go into the kitchen and, hey, I’m not bad at all.

You have close to 300,000 followers on Instagram. How do you handle the subject of social networks?
Well, I wear it regularly. It is a complicated world, I use it as a work tool, but it is difficult to know what content your followers like. I eat my head too much. If I were an anonymous girl, I think I’d pass the networks.

How do you imagine yourself in ten years?
Well, without a wrinkle (laughs). I would like to continue singing, to be able to fill theaters. I would also love to be a mother, although without hurry. Before I would like to fulfill my professional dreams, I would not park them for having children soon, I have it clear.

“I don’t flirt! I always go out with friends and there is no way to meet someone outside of my world”

And would you park them for love?
No way! And you can put this in capital letters. Also, if I don’t flirt! I always go out with friends and there is no way to meet someone outside of my world. I need new people, I’m going to join the gym to see if there…

    And use dating apps?
No, I’m not worth it (laughs).

With how beautiful you are, you should have a line of suitors!
No way. If you know someone, you get excited and then they come out as peteneras. They jump right away with saying they don’t want a commitment. Have I told you that I want to marry you? Anyway…

“I’ve been very much at home, since I was little. I even like cleaning!”

What do you like to do when you’re not working on music?
I am very from home, since I was little. I even like cleaning! Watch movies, series, be with my friends.

    An confessable defect?
I am very afraid of losing the affection of the people I love and I give it too much importance, for example, if a friend answers me badly. I would like to change it.
