The Simpsons Predicted Depreciation of Russian Currency: A Look at Their Prophecies

The legendary animated series “The Simpsons” “foresaw” the depreciation of the Russian currency long before modern events.

In 1999, the animated series The Simpsons aired an episode in which a Russian representative at a meeting of the Olympic Committee receives a message that the dollar against the ruble has risen to a thousand. This was due to the selection of Paris as the host city for the 2024 Olympics. “Prediction” was made in the 20th episode of the 10th season.

According to the plot of the animated series, Moscow also claimed to host the Olympics, the representative of the Russian Federation tried to praise the economy of his country, but while he was lying about a stable ruble, his pager beeped. The Russian learned that the exchange rate changed in just a second.

12 rubles! 60 rubles! 1 thousand rubles! It’s time for me to run!‘ the man shouted, clutching his head.

Many fans of the series consider this a prophecy, since in reality Paris really became the capital of the Olympics, and the dollar/ruble exchange rate rose to 101 rubles in August 2023.

However, this is not the first time that The Simpsons has predicted the future: Lady Gaga’s performance at the Super Bowl, the war in Kosovo, the tragedy with the submersible at the Titanic and many other events were also guessed in the series.

Recall, trying to save the ruble, the authorities of the Russian Federation inflicted a serious blow to the economy by raising the key rate.

August 16 Russian Central Bank through rate hike
left Russian currency in the range of 90-100 rubles per dollar.
