A few days ago, a man – a public figure, former MP, former presidential councilor and university professor – wrote a Facebook post in which he openly praised Adolf Hitler. From the text we understand that the author’s admiration for Hitler stems from two circumstances. First the man spoke of the Führer’s astonishing statesmanship. Here is a quote: “Hitler was an extraordinary statesman who achieved astonishing miracles in the economy, infrastructure, rising living standards, eradicating unemployment, building a unique military industry and a super-modern and staggeringly motivated and unprecedentedly inspired army.” And, secondly, the author is delighted with the courage that, in his opinion, Hitler showed at the end of his life. According to the author of the post, the leader of the Third Reich was a “courageous Führer of state, people, society and citizens … Hitler remained until his last second in his bunker in Berlin and commits suicide by simultaneously breaking the ampoule of cyankalium with his teeth and shooting himself in the right temple with his “Walter”.
In a civilized country, such praise of Hitler by a public figure would be impossible. It is impossible for normal people to praise a man whose actions led to the most devastating war in human history, to the deaths of 80 million people, to the deliberate extermination of 6 million Jews. If any public figure in a civilized country gave expression to the fact that he liked Hitler, the citizen in question would become an object of eternal contempt. And what happened in our country after the appearance of the Facebook post praising the Führer? Two news sites immediately reprinted it. Do their bosses also like Hitler? True, one site later took down the post, but it is still there on the other.
After seeing the praise of Hitler in question, with great impatience I began to wait for the reactions of all those non-governmental organizations, journalistic associations, official state institutions or simply citizens who constantly talk about the threat of “neo-fascism”. Guess if anyone listed said something on the topic. No one. Nothing. The same people who last week were going to tear Sonya Momchilova apart, just because of the literal truth she spoke, namely that during war all the involved parties use propaganda, have now remained firmly silent. NGOs were silent, fact-checkers were silent, Prime Minister Denkov was silent, who was so worried that day about neo-fascism and called on the state authorities to investigate on this occasion “Vazrazhdane”, the third party in terms of electoral results in Bulgaria. What better example of fascism than that person’s Facebook post and sharing it in some media!? But on the part of the so-called “awakened civil society” not a word, not a cry, not a groan.
What is the reason for this silence in the face of such an outright fascist manifestation? It is due to the fact that the author of the praise of Hitler, as well as the sites that reprinted it, are from “ours”. They are staunch Euro-Atlanticists and equally staunch Russophobes. You have noticed that today it is enough to praise Brussels, insult Russia, and from there everything will be forgiven. You can write the greatest stupidity or the most terrible abomination, such as praising Hitler, but if you put the sentence “Down with Russia!” at the beginning and at the end of the pasquila, the so-called “awakened civil society” will not cause you a problem. I will even applaud the abomination you have created. The Euro-Atlantic community will invent fascism where it doesn’t exist, but will never recognize blatant fascism in its ranks.
And another example of double standards of the week. You know that in Bulgaria there are some people who made a good career fighting against the “cops”, “state security networks”, “shadow networks of the services”. This group of thirty years explains that all rich people in our country have become rich because of the red briefcases and because of their connections with State Security. Well, these same people now nominated as a candidate for mayor a person whose grandfather, father and uncle were employees of this same DS, which was to blame for everything. If we use the logic that the DS fighters showed us throughout the transition, we cannot help but come to the conclusion that the mayoral candidate in question became rich precisely because of his proximity to State Security. But in this case, those fighting against DS do not see any problem. Their pathos applies only when someone is not of their people. When it comes to “their boy,” all moral concerns fall away. A principled position, whichever way you look at it.
