“The Shutdown of Kozloduy NPP’s Unit VI: Preventive Measures, No Radiation Leakage”

“The shutdown of Unit VI of the Kozloduy NPP is due to a leak from the steam generator, it is preventive, there is no radiation. He announced this in an interview for the show”Face to face” the acting Minister of Energy Rosen Hristov.

According to him, this unit has been problematic ever since it was put into operation, but over the years this problem has not been publicized. “It needs large-scale rehabilitation, which can be done during the next scheduled repair, the minister specified.

Hristov also explained that the preventive shutdown of Unit VI was done so that it did not coincide with the scheduled repair of Unit V, so that they would not go out of service at the same time.

The Acting Minister of Energy defined as realistic the idea of 4 new reactors – two for the Kozloduy NPP and two for the Belene NPP. “V and VI units must be decommissioned by 2050. We foresee two replacements and two additional ones, as the transition to a green economy requires the electrification of the entire industry,” commented Hristov.

However, the use of the equipment we bought from Russia for the Belene NPP is questionable, it became clear from the minister’s words. Negotiations are underway with a French company to do a feasibility study on the matter.
