November 5 – At least nine people were shot dead in Philadelphia on Saturday night, leaving two in critical condition, police said.
Several shooters got out of a vehicle in the Kensington, Pennsylvania area and began firing, firing about 40 rounds, Philadelphia First Deputy Police Chief John Stanford said in a televised briefing.
The injured are in hospital, seven of them in stable condition, he said.
The purpose of the shooters, who got into the vehicle and left, was unknown, Stanford said, adding that police were investigating.
The incident comes after a series of school shootings in the United States that have resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries this year alone, adding to a longstanding debate in the United States on gun control. One of the deadliest occurred in May when a gunman killed 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas.
One person was killed and about 20 were injured on Halloween night in shootings in Kansas City and Chicago.
