At just four months old, the symptoms announced their arrival on French Sybil Marzin’s body: Burning, itchy and red spots spread across her body at record speed.
Throughout her childhood, large and inflamed eczema was a problem, says the now 25-year-old woman to the Jam Press news agency. But with the help of cortisone cream, she kept the skin in check.
Then one day just a few months ago she stopped using the cream – and then all hell broke loose.
No one knows who is behind it
– Terrible
– I was tired of smearing myself all the time, and I thought it might be healthy for the face to breathe a little, says the 25-year-old to Jam.
She says that she abruptly stopped using the cream, which she later greatly regretted:
Shortly after she stopped, her skin experienced withdrawal symptoms – which led to great pain for the young woman.
– My skin became extremely red, burning and inflamed. I was completely shocked. My eyes also became very swollen, she tells the news agency.
– In addition, I got dry crusts all over my face which were terribly painful, she says further.
Had withdrawal symptoms
At a doctor’s it was clarified that Sybil had topical steroid withdrawal (TSW).
TSW is according to the consumer website With Norway a rare reaction that can occur when stopping the use of certain cortisol creams.
The reaction can in some cases result in a rash that is more serious and painful than the original eczema, the website continues.
Sybil says that the skin has gotten worse and worse and that the pain is barely bearable after she stopped using the cream. She is also unable to work anymore – both because she is in great pain, but also because she feels uncomfortable.
– It’s really ugly and just absolutely awful, says Sybil to Jam.
Dagbladet has previously written about Andrea (32), who also suffered cream shock when she stopped using cortisone cream. She was also unable to get to work due to the discomfort.
Punished for this: – Worst I’ve seen
Warns
Sybil tells Jam that she hopes that sometime in the future she will get rid of her skin problems, and now wants to warn others who may end up in the same boat.
– If I had known what I know now, I would never have stopped so suddenly or without talking to a doctor first. Having TSW is extremely difficult, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, she continues.
Norwegian Health Informatics writes that long-term use of cortisone creams requires a slow and gradual tapering of the doses.
They also point out that you must never stop such treatment without consulting a doctor first, and that it is important to know your body’s signals when tapering off.
