A 65-year-old woman was beaten up on the street in New York on Monday. Images captured by CCTV cameras show the victim was walking when a man started beating her up, yelling, “Fuck you, you don’t belong here.” In the shocking video, the woman can be seen being thrown to the ground before receiving multiple blows to the head, while lying on the ground. The facts occurred in front of a building and several men witnessed this attack, without ever trying to come to help the victim, explains the “New York Post“. Worse yet, the video ends with one of the residence guards closing the door as the assailant walks away and the woman is on the ground. The suspect is actively wanted by the police. The victim suffered from a fractured pelvis and was taken to NYU Langone Hospital, where her condition was stable, on Tuesday.
“It’s absolutely devilish,” said Corey Johnson, spokesperson for the city council, on Monday. This attack comes in a particularly tense context for the Asian community, victim since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, of a considerable increase in racist acts against it. The investigation was assigned to the New York Police Hate Crimes Unit. It has recorded a 1300% increase in racist crimes against Asian Americans in the city since the start of the pandemic. The nonprofit social organization Stop AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Hate, reported that between March 2020 and February 2021, it received 3,795 reports of anti-Asian hate incidents in the country. She found that verbal harassment accounts for 68% of hate incidents, physical assaults 11% and that women are 2.3 times more likely to report racist acts against them. Donald Trump himself has repeatedly called Covid-19 a “Chinese virus”.
In mid-March, three shootings by the same man broke out in Atlanta. They killed eight people, including six Asian women who worked in massage parlors. If for the moment, the hateful nature of these killings has not been officially accepted, President Joe Biden quickly said he understood the concern of Americans of Asian origin. A few days later, a 76-year-old Chinese retiree was also assaulted in San Francisco, but had managed to defend herself by hitting her attacker in return, becoming the symbol of the fight against anti-Asian racism.
