The Shocking History of Cambodia: Reflections and Emotional Reactions from the Travelers

Together with Estavana, Ad, Frits, Henny and Edwin travel to Cambodia. In addition to all the fun activities, the tour group also finds it important to reflect on the history of the country. For example, they visit the Khmer Rouge, a prison where about 2 million innocent people were murdered in the years 1975 to 1979. Including children. Upon entering, Henny immediately feels an ‘incredibly nasty atmosphere’. It doesn’t take long before Henny bursts into tears when he sees the photos and skulls of these young children. “As if they were criminals. (…) Look at it. (…) This is really bad.”

Estavana walks over to him to give him a hug, but Henny is inconsolable. “I want to be brave, but..” Besides the fact that he is very sad about the fate of these children, he also has to think about his own family. “You see your own grandchildren. Those little skulls.” Since it is becoming too much for him, Henny decides to leave the room. “I don’t need to see this. (…) How can people do that to each other, man. I think this is so shitty.”

Not only Henny, but also the other gentlemen are shocked. “What cowardly dogs, huh,” says Ad. Frits also doesn’t understand how people can be ‘so horrible’ to each other. “It’s often about origins. Black, white, Jew or non-Jew. Muslim. But here it’s about their own countrymen.” No matter how drastic and intense it is, the men are also grateful that they are reflecting on a piece of history. “No matter how strange it sounds: I am grateful – in quotes – that we are allowed to see this. That we don’t just think: gosh, we are having so much fun together.”

The viewers are also affected. ‘What an impressive episode.’ Someone else writes: ‘Henny, I understand you.’
