The Shocking Experience of a Japanese Tourist Paying IDR 10 Million for Crab Menu in Singapore

Jakarta

In Singapore, food prices are really expensive. But this Japanese tourist was shocked when he had to pay IDR 10 million for the crab menu he ordered at a restaurant.

Singapore is famous for its chili crab dish, or crab with chili sauce which has become a food icon from this lion country. Many tourists come from various countries, wanting to taste this popular crab dish.

Like a Japanese tourist named Junko Shinba who ate at the Seafood Paradise restaurant at Clarke Quay last August. Junko came with her family and several friends.

Reporting from AsiaOne (20/09), Junko was interested in entering the restaurant while walking around Clarke Quay. The waiter there advised them to try the crab menu for SGD 30 (Rp. 338,300).

But Junko was not told that the price was actually for the price per 100 grams of crab, not the entire crab menu. Finally they ordered Alaska King Crab, the market price of which was SGD 26.80 (Rp. 302,250) per 100 grams.

Alaska King Crab itself is the largest type of crab in the world that can be eaten. It weighs from 2-5 kg.

Because of this, Junko’s food bill reached SGD 1,322 (Rp. 14.9 million), which consisted of a crab menu for SGD 900 (Rp. 10.1 million). The rest they ordered Black Pepper Beef Fried Rice, Crisp Fried Yam Ring and others.

“We were all shocked when we found out that the bill was for food for four people. None of the restaurant waiters explained that one crab would be cooked for us, because other restaurants only served a few pieces of crab,” complained Junko.

Junko said the portion of crab was too big so they couldn’t finish it all. Because she couldn’t accept the very expensive food bill, Junko finally contacted the police to resolve this problem.

The local police immediately came to the restaurant and tried to mediate with the restaurant waiter. The restaurant showed another customer’s bill to prove that they had not increased the price of the crab that Junko ordered.

In the end the restaurant manager only offered a discount of around SGD 107.40 (Rp. 1.2 million), and Junko paid the rest.

Junko said that they had contacted the Singapore Tourism Board to discuss this incident. Responding to this, the Paradise Group explained that the waiter at the restaurant had explained the menu and prices in detail to each buyer.

“To avoid miscommunication, our employee Bakhwan brought a whole Alaskan King Crab to the buyer before cooking it. But when the bill came out, the buyer didn’t want to pay and instead contacted the police. The restaurant finally gave a discount because the buyer admitted he didn’t have enough money to pay. ” concluded the Paradise Group representative.

Previously there was also a story about a local tourist from Malaysia who ordered several seafood dishes at a stall with a total price of up to IDR 2.6 million. However, netizens think this price is expensive and that tourists have become victims of naughty sellers who gouge prices.
