In 1974, Hawking introduced the idea that black holes would evaporate over time due to loss of radiation, now known as ‘Hawking Radiation’. At first, it was thought that only black holes could produce this radiation, but a recent update to this theory shocked the scientific world.
“All objects that have enough mass, not just black holes, can emit Hawking Radiation,” explained Professor of Astrophysics at Radboud University in the Netherlands, Heino Falcke, as quoted from Live Science.
The consequences are dire. If this theory is correct, it means that everything in the universe will slowly evaporate and disappear because the energy is sucked in. This creates a new doomsday picture for the universe, in which everything will eventually evaporate, similar to how black holes are thought to evaporate.
Falcke added, “This changes not only our understanding of Hawking Radiation, but also our view of the universe and its future.”
The surprising findings, published June 2 in the journal Physical Review Letters, spark a new debate about how we understand and predict the future of the universe.
