The death of Kate Barry had the effect of a real shock within his entire family. The British photographer is died at 46, on December 11, 2013, following a fall from the fourth floor of the building where she lived in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. Without it ever being able to be established whether it was an accidental or intentional fallhis loved ones, in particular his son, Roman de Kermadec, his sister, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and his mother, Jane Birkin, all were deeply affected following this tragedy. On the occasion of the upcoming arrival of the retrospective dedicated to Kate Barry and her photographic works on December 15 at the Quai de la photo in Paris, his son confided with our colleagues from Paris Match this Thursday, October 19, revealing without taboo the feelings experienced by these loved ones and by himself during this tragedy.
Shortly after the death of Kate Barry, Charlotte Gainsbourg felt the need to leave Paris to live in New York. A departure who had a bad experience Jane Birkin, but that her grandson understood well: “Charlotte did like all of us, that is to say as best she could. When my mother died, everyone at that time tried to save their skin. I can understand why she needed to flee” confided the nephew of Charlotte Gainsbourg. A feeling that Yvan Attal’s wife also has confirmed a few months agoon the podcast microphone Totemic from Radio France: “I had the feeling of actually escaping, of leaving Paris, where my sister died six months before [son départ, ndlr], my mother was obviously very bad, my sister Lou too. But I was saving my skin“ she confided. A painful but necessary exile, which lasted for more than six years.

Also confiding in himself during his interview with Paris MatchKate Barry’s son revealed to have “dark” after the death of his mother : “I knocked myself out with alcohol, it was so violent to see my world collapse, to be an orphan at 25, without really understanding why. I was angry with her, with the whole world and, at the same time, so sad. And This is how I still feel today about his death.“ he revealed.
Then leaving to live with his grandmother Jane Birkin, the young man was impressed by the strength of the latter “despite his illness” : “She was a pillar, she became like a second mother. She was the one who stood by me when I wasn’t well, who helped me through the most difficult times. And When I started to get up, I felt that she was very relieved. She was very afraid of losing me too“. An ordeal which brought grandmother and grandson even closer in their relationships.
