Located on the island of Manhattan, this magnificent spiral staircase was a tourist delight, before it suddenly closed in 2021. It is now secure.

Just a few days after its inauguration in March 2019, its architectural originality (46 meters high, 154 interconnected stairs, nearly 2,500 steps and 80 landings) was placed in tourist guides and at the heart of the area. New Yorkbefore Covid 19 violently closed it to the public in the summer of 2021. Located in the Hudson Yards area, which grew up on an island Manhattan, The Ship (or “the ship”, in French) will reopen this year to visitors – no specific date yet -, with new security measures, we learn on site. The famous staircase had to be closed after a series of suicides in 2021. Currently, it is only possible to access the base between 10 am and 9 pm, without reservation.

From now on, the famous staircase will be equipped with a new protective structure, which should withstand sabotage attempts and bad weather. “We developed a plan to install a roof-to-ceiling steel truss on The Ship, whilst preserving the unique experience enjoyed by millions of visitors from around the world to attract the world,” a spokesperson for Hudson Yards contacted the American media. “We look forward to welcoming visitors back to Ship later this year.”

Several pieces of information have filtered out about the group’s future. The first two levels of the stairs will be reopened. Only the top floor will be closed to the public, due to the difficulty of setting up security barriers. At intermediate levels, tourists can only access restricted areas. Opened in March 2019, The Ship is considered one of Midtown Manhattan’s architectural gems. It was designed by English designer Thomas Heatherwick.

Initially, his work was intended to provide new views of New York City, with different perspectives and heights. Before it closed, the entrance fee was $10. Officials have not announced new prices yet.
