Zafirov is a political adviser at the UN mission in Jerusalem. He is a diplomat attached to the office of the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Venesland.
For almost a decade now, the Bulgarian has been the person who contacts the Palestinian organizations and the Israeli authorities when conflicts break out, and the goal is always one – to achieve peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
“Just last week, 38 rockets were fired at Israeli territory by their northern neighbor. This led to negotiations, in which we were involved, for 24 hours in order to balance the response that the Israeli army would make. The danger in this conflict that I have seen is that everything is happening very quickly. The last major escalation happened in one afternoon, and we had no reason to think that it would develop like this in 11 days. Then we were on the verge of the conflict developing at war,” he pointed out.
“The conflict, for one reason or another, can be seen as political, but it takes on a religious overtone. This is a conflict about Jerusalem. Those texts in the holy books that give the right to claim the city are at the bottom of the conflict. From a pragmatic point of view the bad thing is that we officially recognize how difficult it is and the horizon is lost,” added Zafirov.
According to him, escalation will be at the bottom of subsequent conflicts.
“I am not at an age where I am free to give advice. To this day, I feel an attitude towards the place where I started my professional path – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is often undeservedly blamed for many things”.
“The people who work there make sure that, in one way or another, Bulgaria’s interests are protected internationally. I would encourage young people who want to do this. It won’t be easy for them, but it’s insanely interesting. Sometimes they have the feeling of this action, which each one of us likes to experience”, said Miroslav Zafirov.
