On November 30, from 10 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., alarm sirens will be triggered across the country for three minutes. The SFRS urges the population not to worry, because it is another test of alarm sirens.
“Alarm sirens are designed to warn the population in the event of a natural or man-made disaster or threat thereof. It is important to regularly check alarm sirens so that if they need to be used in a real situation, they work without interruption,” says the head of the SFRS Civil Protection Department. Colonel Ivars Nakurts.
“If you do not hear the alarm sirens during the test, do not worry, as other means of communication will be used in emergencies, such as the transmission of information through loudspeakers,” the service said.
The SFRS calls on the hotel administration to inform its foreign guests about the upcoming alarm siren check so that there is no unnecessary worry.
In Latvia, 164 alarm sirens have been installed, which are located so that the transmitted sound signal can be heard within a radius of about 1.5 kilometers (depending on the height of the siren location, territorial features, daily city noise, humidity and wind strength).
The SFRS recalls that in cases where the population has not been warned in advance about the inspection of sirens, upon hearing the alarm siren signal, the population must turn on televisions and radios or other devices, such as mobile phone radios, to receive information about the reason for switching on and necessary action.
In accordance with the Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. of 8 August 2017 440 “Procedures for the Establishment, Operation and Financing of the National Early Warning System” The SFRS performs a readiness test of alarm sirens in order to check the technical condition of alarm sirens and cooperation with the media (radio and TV).
