Supported by Democrats and Republicans, the U.S. Senate passed significant measures to protect children online on Tuesday, July 30. It is the first significant move against the technology industry in a long time.
Senator Chuck Schumer described the day as “unusual”. He emphasized, “The Senate has kept its promise to all parents who have lost a child due to the dangers of social networks”.

The legislative process is only half complete and approval by the House of Representatives is still pending.
The decision there is more uncertain, and a verdict is not expected before the end of their parliamentary recess in September.
