As the concerts planned for the spring had to be postponed due to gathering restrictions, all ten semi-finalist works will be heard on one evening on Thursday. Anna Vibe, Arta Jēkabsone, Elza Ozoliņa, Īrisa Ekerte will perform at the JVLMA and Riga Dome Choir School big band conducted by vocalist Beata Zviedre and Dāvis Jurka (Iris Eckert), Jānis Rubikas, Kristīna Bjanka Rantalas (Kristina Bianca Rantala), Compositions by Krista Saržants, Reinis Ašmanis, Sven Wilson and Zane Švēde-Grīnbergs. In this concert, three finalists will be determined, whose works will be performed by the Latvian Radio Big Band and Beāte Zviedre in the Spīķeri Concert Hall on December 4.
Composers aged 18 to 30 who permanently live or study in the Baltic States were invited to participate in the Baltic Young Composers’ Big Band composition competition with one self-composed piece. The first round ended in April this year, when 21 young composers submitted their works for evaluation. Rauls Sēts, an experienced and internationally acclaimed jury from the Baltic States (Raul Sööt, Estonia), Jievaras Jasinskis (Jievaras Jasinskis, Lithuania) and Rolands Kronlaks (Latvia) – nominated ten compositions.
The author of the competition idea and JVLMA Jazz class leader, associate professor Indrikis Weitners praised the performance of the young composers, confirming the ability of young Latvian and Baltic jazz musicians to compose serious, extensive and complex large-format compositions for a big band.
