The Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) believes that the national vaccination registry, SIVAIN, is a good opportunity to better understand vaccination coverage by gender and reduce inequality in vaccination.
The SEE has presented a series of considerations to the public hearing process of the Royal Order that governs the Immunization and Immunization Information System. Among them, guaranteeing the confidentiality of the people in the record or including budget considerations to provide the performance of the Royal Order with an amount of 25 million euros.
The scientific community highly values this national vaccination record, which will be essential for evaluating vaccination strategies and taking measures to control vaccine-preventable diseases. Besides, think yes “good chance” to improve the breakdown of vaccination coverage by sex, which has not been noted in any registry so far.
According to the document brought to the public hearing, SIVAIN’s Technical Coordination Unit, as well as the Immunization Information Systems Working Group of Immunization Programs and Registration Display, will ensure that the information is separated by sex. In this way, the impact of sex-based vaccination programs can be assessed. In addition, it allows us to know the impact of gender on the generation of inequalities with the aim of correcting them.
Among the contributions made by the SEE to the document is also the need to prepare for SIVAIN interoperability conditions to be able to connect to databases from other administrations or departments, including, in terms of -within the framework of the current legislation, the transfer and use of the data by third parties for research purposes. They have also requested that attention be paid to the number of variables that will be registered, trying to ensure that they are only those that are necessary so that the registration systems are not overloaded.
