Despite the fact that today filmmakers have more technical and financial capabilities, the success of Soviet films has not yet been surpassed. Even if a modern film is very popular now, in a year it may no longer be remembered. What is the secret of Soviet films and how do they manage to be at the peak of popularity even after 30 years?
Soviet cinema reflected the soul of a Russian person
In each picture there was real life, real feelings, real emotions – not a drop of lies. The humor was kind, the characters were well-mannered and smart, and movie scenes were always familiar and understandable to all citizens of the Soviet Union.
Just remember how beautifully Ekaterina Tikhomirova in Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears survived her pain and reached heights – without meanness, deceit, and so on. And how the audience laughed at the film “The Incredible Adventures of Italians in Russia” – one phrase “Be careful, you will crush the fish!” what is it worth. Then even fictional stories looked like real ones, because they were very close to life.
Spreading Right Values
Often the government itself commissioned the films in order to spread the right values among the citizens. All films were designed to be watched by the whole family – censorship did not allow vulgarities, and the films revealed the themes of friendship, loyalty, respect and love. It is impossible not to remember the Soviet fairy tales: “Marya the Craftsman”, “The Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors”, “Morozko” and others – they are all imbued with love for their family, friendship and wisdom.
Money is not the main thing
Making a lot of money for the directors was not the main goal, but rather a pleasant bonus – the warm appreciation of the audience was much more important for them than large fees.
Actors did not play, but lived their roles
Soviet actors did not play according to the script – they reincarnated as their heroes and did not play in front of the cameras, but as if they were themselves. The audience became observers of someone’s, as it seemed, “real” life: how Tosya Kislitsyna in “Girls” came to work at a logging site, or how relations between the characters developed in “Love and Pigeons” – everything was so believable that in some that moment you just forgot that you were watching a movie and started to feel like a part of this story.
Brilliant screenwriters
According to the script, the heroes of the films often uttered such quotes, which were immediately introduced into the philistine speech, as they were ingeniously funny. For example, the quotes “What a disgusting thing this fish of yours is …”, “Well, you have a face, Sharapov!”, “Note, I didn’t suggest this!”, “Who will plant him? He’s a monument! etc. are used to this day. Even telegrams make stickers with quotes from Soviet films.
Calm pace
Unlike Hollywood blockbusters, where everything flies back and forth and collapses, Soviet films showed the measured life of people. There were not so many cars, people did not fuss – everything was calm and comfortable, at home.
Music
Songs from Soviet films are re-sung to this day. The song of the bears and the “Prisoner of the Caucasus”, the song about the Island of Bad Luck from the “Diamond Hand”, or “Call Me, Call” from the movie “Carnival” and so on. people sing and know the words by heart even today, and how many covers of songs from Soviet films have already been done – you can’t even count.
Films in the USSR were made for people
Perhaps this is the main secret of their popularity. The audience laughed, worried, angry, worried and even prayed for the heroes.
Even today, people choose to watch some Soviet film instead of a modern one, and nothing that has already been watched 100 times will still be interesting and funny 101 times.
