Maintaining weight after a diet is difficult, no matter how fast or slow you lose it, so what is the secret to stopping fat loss while sticking to the diet?

This question is answered by the famous nutrition expert, Dr. Michael Mosley, who confirmed that when weight is lost, not only do we get rid of fat, but we also lose a large amount of muscle, which leads to a decrease in calorie burning, which causes the cessation of weight loss. According to what was published by the British “Daily Mail”.

muscle loss

And unlike fat, muscle burns energy throughout the day, even when a person is asleep. So when we lose muscle, our basal metabolic rate (the calories we burn at rest) also slows down, so weight loss does not reach a steady level. In addition, it is difficult to prevent weight gain when you stop dieting, which is a common problem with many diets. .

The secret is in the protein

Muscles and active metabolic rates can be maintained if a person wants to lose weight following the old traditional ways by making sure to get enough protein in the diet because it is crucial to maintaining muscle mass.

To lose weight safely and effectively, make sure you get at least 50 grams of protein per day (good sources are meat, fish, eggs, tofu, and whole grains) and spread your daily protein intake over the three main meals, as it is one of the best ways to absorb it.

As Dr. Moseley explains, whether a person is trying to lose weight or not, he recommends eating two eggs (15g protein) or fish (25g protein) for breakfast, making sure to get at least 20g of protein at each of the two lunches. and evening.

He also recommends regular exercise, especially resistance exercises, such as push-ups and squats, to help maintain muscle.

A drug that suppresses appetite

But a recent study suggests that it is possible to get rid of excess fat using a drug called GDF15, which appears to stimulate weight loss through two distinct mechanisms: suppressing appetite as well as activating muscles so that they burn more calories, according to the journal Nature.

Researchers at McMaster University in Canada took two groups of mice and injected one with GDF15, while the other groups served as controls. Both groups were put on a calorie-restricted diet, and within two weeks all of the mice lost weight at roughly the same rate.

But after four weeks, even though all the mice were still on the same diet, the weight loss had leveled off in those not given the drug.

More research

Mice given GDF15 continued to lose weight, dropping to about 75% of their initial weight in some cases.

More research is needed, the researchers said, but it is clear that a drug that helps preserve muscle during weight loss has great potential.
