Zam Zam water considered a blessing for Muslims. Therefore, everyone who returns from a pilgrimage or Umrah trip will bring this water as a gift for family and relatives. Have you ever thought, why Zamzam water never dries up?
This discussion, even though it has an Islamic background, also has a scientific and logical explanation that is very much in line with religious stories.
Zamzam water has existed since the time of Prophet Ishmael. Miraculously, the spring of zamzam came out when Prophet Ismail cried because of thirst in the desert with his mother, Siti Hajar.

Historical documents show that the era was estimated at 1910 BC so that if adjusted to the Hijri calendar, Zamzam water has existed for more than 4,000 years.
This also raises the question of how Zamzam water has not been dry for thousands of years. Quoted from Egypt TodayTuesday (12/7/2022) Abbas Sharaqi, Professor of Geology and Water Resources at the African Research Institute, said the secret is, the water in the Zamzam well never runs dry because it is connected to renewable groundwater.
“The absence of depletion in geology means that it is renewable water. Groundwater can be renewed, like in the zamzam well,” Sharaqi said.
He also explained, Zam Zam water is renewable water whose source is rain in the city of Mecca. Makkah is a mountainous area and one of its valleys holds water for the Zamzam well in the lowlands.
According to Sharaqi, there are 14 meters of river sediments formed from rainwater in the mountains that fall to the lowlands and turn into sediment.
This process takes millions of years to make the Zamzam well which is 14 meters long. At the very bottom there is a collection of rocks which makes the total depth of the Zamzam well to reach 35 meters.
“Air in the well zamzam used as drinking water for the congregation and not used for agriculture, “he said.
“The Zamzam well has been used for more than 4,000 years, this makes us think that if there is no rain in Saudi Arabia, maybe the water will run out. However, given the stable and unchanging climatic conditions, the well can continue to exist,” he concluded.
