Don’t be surprised if it’s a racer MotoGP can immediately stand up and walk even though it just had a crash. There are several factors that enable them to do that.
In almost every MotoGP series there are riders who have had accidents, starting from free practice sessions, qualifying, and especially when racing. Starting from minor accidents, to experiencing serious injuries like what happened to Marc Marquez.
However, in general, riders can walk immediately after having an accident. Despite being dragged tens of meters away or knocked off their motorbikes, they rarely suffer serious injuries.
There are three things that make the riders able to walk with ease even after an accident. Quoted from Redbull.com, here are 3 secrets:
1. Application of Physical Sciences
The chances of surviving a big MotoGP crash because their fall from the bike is a ‘controlled fall’. MotoGP riders do not experience fatal events because they do not hit solid objects directly (for example, hitting walls).

On the other hand, the MotoGP rider who crashed was dragged on the asphalt for several tens of meters. When dragged, the speed decreased drastically but gradually. This long drag (which is braking) is what saves the racer.
2. Sophisticated and Safe Racing Suits
Another factor that has a big influence on the safety of MotoGP riders is the sophisticated equipment they use. The high-tech racing suit is made of kangaroo leather which is highly durable but comfortable to wear at the same time.
The biggest invention in racing suit safety technology is the airbag system – which in the past two years has been a requirement for Dorna to wear by every rider. When the sensor detects an accident, the airbag will automatically expand in a fraction of a second. This makes the rider experience less shocks and impacts.
As an illustration, the airbag technology used by Alpinestars on Marc Marquez’s racing suit is able to fully expand in 25 milliseconds. So before the riders hit the asphalt after they were thrown from the motorbike, the airbags were fully open.

3. MotoGP riders trained to fall
MotoGP riders have their own technique when they fall. These techniques must be learned in order to avoid serious injury.
The five-time world champion from Germany, Toni Mang, is considered to be the first rider to prepare himself for an accident. In 1980 he hired former instructors from the German armed forces.
The instructor didn’t just provide physical training for Mang. But also teach him how to do soft landing.
In their daily life, MotoGP riders undergo training to strengthen their muscles. This also helps them avoid getting injured during an accident.
