Apple launched a Mac computer equipped with the M1 chip in November, and many developers tested it to verify its powerful performance. Recently, the developer Sera Tonin Brocious (@daeken) successfully made Nintendo Nitendo Switch games run on MacBook Pro, verifying the flexibility of the ARM architecture of the M1 chip.

Sera Tonin Brocious (@daeken) posted a video on twitter showing the screen of the Nitendo Switch game “Super Mario Odyssey” running on the macOS Big Sur operating system. In addition, the developer also installed “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”, but there is no related execution screen.

Sera Tonin Brocious (@daeken) uses Yuzu, the Switch open source simulator. As you can see from the video, although the game is successfully launched through Yuzu, the game cannot be played in the end due to technical limitations of the MoltenVK runtime library (support issues with the Metal graphics framework).

ARM architecture allows Switch games to run on macOS

Although it cannot be played, this test also verifies the compatibility of the M1 chip. The M1 chip uses the ARM architecture. Compared with the x86 architecture of other Mac chips, it is easier to use the M1 chip to simulate the ARM architecture Switch processor. The developer said that in addition to macOS, iOS also has the possibility of running Nitendo Switch games.

Nintendo officially does not allow players to use game emulators to play Nitendo Switch games, and the developer may face potential legal risks. However, this is an interesting technology show that highlights the flexibility of the ARM architecture Apple chip.
